We are a movement of United Methodists who recognize that it is wrong for The United Methodist Church to profit from wrecking the planet. Indeed, profiting from fossil fuel companies undermines the very ministries that our investments are meant to support.
Our mission is to convince UMC Annual Conferences and Wespath (the pension and health benefits agency of the United Methodist Church) to divest from fossil fuel companies and to reinvest in clean energy companies, and to add coal, petroleum and natural gas to the list of socially responsible investment screens in the Book of Discipline and Book of Resolutions.
- Educate individuals and congregations about why divestment from fossil fuels is an important strategy for combatting climate change.
- Support legislation calling for annual conferences to divest institutional funds from the fossil fuel industry.
- Be in conversation with representatives of the Wespath as well as representatives of other United Methodist and affiliated agencies, including the General Board of Church and Society, the General Board of Global Ministries, and United Methodist Women.
United Methodists in annual conferences around the United States are working together to promote Fossil Free UMC legislation in their conferences. We need your help in supporting campaigns that are underway, and in starting campaigns in more annual conferences as well as central conferences. To get involved, email fossilfreeumc (at) gmail.com.
