We are a movement of United Methodists who recognize that it is wrong for The United Methodist Church to profit from wrecking the planet. Indeed, profiting from fossil fuel companies undermines the very ministries that our investments are meant to support.
Our mission is to convince the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits of The United Methodist Church to divest from fossil fuel companies and to reinvest in clean energy companies, and to add coal, petroleum and natural gas to the list of socially responsible investment screens in the Book of Discipline and Book of Resolutions.
- Educate individuals and congregations about why divestment from fossil fuels is an important strategy for combatting climate change. Sign up to join a webinar orientation here.
- Support annual conference petitions to General Conference 2016 calling for the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits to create investment screens for coal, petroleum and natural gas, and for the addition of coal, petroleum and natural gas to the socially responsible investment screens in the Book of Discipline and Book of Resolutions.
- Be in conversation with representatives of the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits as well as representatives of other United Methodist and affiliated agencies, including the General Board of Church and Society, the General Board of Global Ministries, and United Methodist Women.
United Methodists in annual conferences around the United States are working together to promote Fossil Free UMC legislation in their conferences. We need your help in supporting campaigns that are underway, and in starting campaigns in more annual conferences as well as central conferences. To get involved, email fossilfreeumc (at) gmail.com.
